Using Instructional Videos in the Age of YouTube

This session will highlight the unique strengths of videos compared to other eLearning media, such as their ability to demonstrate complex processes visually, engage learners emotionally, and cater to diverse learning styles. Speakers will emphasize the importance of storytelling, clarity, and pacing when creating instructional videos to ensure they captivate and educate viewers simultaneously. Real-world examples will showcase how well-designed videos can simplify abstract concepts, improve knowledge retention, and foster deeper learner engagement.
Additionally, the session will provide an overview of tools and technologies that streamline the creation of professional-quality instructional videos. Participants will learn about video editing software, screen recording tools, and platforms for hosting and sharing content. The webinar will also touch on best practices for designing videos, such as keeping content concise, incorporating captions, and optimizing for mobile devices. By the end, attendees will be equipped with practical strategies to incorporate video effectively into their instructional design projects in a world increasingly shaped by YouTube's influence.
About Your Facilitator:
Matt Fulmer is an instructional designer/learning and development professional who serves as the Director of Instructional Design at the Texas Association of School Business Officials, a nonprofit organization supporting public schools.
Matt believes that love of learning must be inspired and strives to create learning experiences that are both engaging and experiential, with the overarching objective of inspiring and encouraging true self-directed learners.
He began his professional journey as higher education faculty and transitioned to professional education. Matt holds a master’s degree in digital media from Goddard College, and recently completed an MS in Organizational Leadership at St. Edward’s University.
The ATD Austin Chapter has been pre-approved by the ATD Certification Institute to offer educational programs that can be used towards initial eligibility and recertification of the Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD) and Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD) credentials.
