Enhancing Learning with 3D Virtual Worlds

with Diana Odegard Brauhn

The presentation will be a relaxed format with questions allowed during the presentation. There is time planned after the presentation for more discussion. The presentation begins by showing examples of online learning with a greater focus on introducing 3D virtual worlds. The discussion continues by looking at a cohesive model of 4 learning designs then continues by considering how those designs might guide or facilitate different approaches to learning in 3D virtual worlds.

Presenting: Diana Odegard Brauhn

B.S. Computer Science University of Iowa

M.Ed. Instructional Design and Technology AIU

Ph.D.,abd Instructional Design for Online Learning, Capella

Diana’s background includes a lifetime of public speaking to audiences of all sizes. In the early days of homeschooling, she developed curriculum used for her own children. She consulted on global training development for technicians maintaining high tech manufacturing lines, incorporating problem solving processes and decision making analyses. She was part of the team writing CBT training to replace the ILT training for Navy engineers. The CBT training included the design and development of significant gamificadtion with measurable positive outcomes. She has provided research, analysis, design, and development of courses for the oil industry including training for traders and upstream scientists. She has provided innovative solutions for training in the healthcare industry, fashioned to meet the needs and requirements of doctors and nurses learning a new EMR software. And she has had numerous contracts working as an instructional designer in the IT industry.

Her interest in gamification  of training has grown over the past 2 decades from observing, to studying, to learning how to orchestrate effective learning. Her life-ling interest in computers has joined her curiosity about games and learning in the pursuit of her doctoral degree. Over most of the past decade she has been learning how to function in 3D virtual worlds and is researching how to effectively use 3D virtual worlds to enhance learning.
